Frequently Asked Questions about the Sproutman Kit:
How does the kit work if I don’t use soil?
Please follow the directions included in the Kit, but here is a
simplified version of the process:
1) Seeds are placed in the bottom of the growing tray and
initially only ‘misted’ with the sprayer to start the germination
process.
2) The tray is covered with the dark lid to encourage the seeds
to begin sprouting.
3) As the seeds sprout, tiny roots will emerge and intertwine with one
another to form a ‘mesh’ pad in the bottom of the tray.
4) When the grass grows tall enough to touch the inside of the
dark lid, it is replaced with the clear / opaque lid. The fragile seeds
and plants need not be exposed to too much sun at first.
5) Each tray of seeds (or plants) should be drained every couple of
days, and replaced with another ¼ - ½” of water until the green
shoots have reached the proper height.
If soil is not used, how is the water drained and replaced?
There are slits in the top of each tray, just below the lip. Tilt the
tray until the water runs out these slits.
How do you keep the seeds from falling out when you drain the tray?
The seeds will have formed a mesh mat of interlocking roots
before you have to drain it the first time.
I have heard that the seeds look like they have mildew on them after a few days.
The tiny spidery-looking roots that interlock can sometimes be mistaken for
mildew. However, if you should have real problems with mold or mildew,
please consider that some people use a fine mist or small amount of food grade,
8% hydrogen peroxide in the early stages of seed germination.
Disclaimer: Please do the research yourself before making the decision
to do this. We do not sell this product or recommend it one way or the other.
How far will the 1# bag of seeds go?
A 1# bag of seeds is enough to fill three trays.
How much sun should the seeds / plants have?
The seeds / plants should never be place in direct sunlight….only
indirect.
Are the trays made out of a ‘safe’ plastic?
Yes, the plastic is definitely food grade. It is not BPA free, but that is
only an issue where heat is going to be involved, which it will not be.
